Questions:
1. Tell us about who your character is and what someone’s first impression would be upon meeting them. How would your character act once someone got to know them?
Nishinoya’s a very hyperactive high schooler. He’s friendly and outgoing and bursting with positivity. Despite being short, he has a huge presence. He comes off as very forward and friendly, sometimes a bit too flirtatious with girls. Once you get to know him, he doesn’t change all that much. He’s still friendly and loud. Despite being a bit dumb in the academic department and always acting silly, he has a high emotional intelligence. He notices when those around him are down or feeling discouraged and no matter how he feels he finds the way to change the mood. He isn’t afraid to make himself the butt of jokes if it helps those around him.
2. What is something unique and interesting about them, or what is a fun little tidbit that sets them apart from the crowd?
What sets Nishinoya apart from the crowd is his presence and people skills. He’s hard not to notice. While he seems like a clown, he’s really quite passionate and serious. He’s dedicated to his friends and his teammates. While he was suspended from club activities he had spent the entire time working on a skill that he feels would have helped his team in a previous game. He always takes responsibility for things on the court because he feels like it’s his job to keep the ball in the air. In this he also knows that his teammates try to shoulder the blame but it gets into their heads so he is willing to argue and yell at them because if he’s on the court they can’t give up because he will get the ball.
This is only possible because of his ability to read his teammates, understand what they’re thinking and know what they need to hear.
3. What does your character think their flaws are? What do they think their strengths are? What are their actual flaws and strengths?
Nishinoya feels like his height is a flaw. Even though he’s able to be successful in the game he loves he’s very sensitive about it. He sees his strength as his ability to work hard and improve.
In reality, Noya’s biggest flaw is one of his strengths. His determination to push himself and his friends to the best can at times lead to strife. His persistence can sometimes have the opposite effect that he intends, where a teammate is having trouble dealing with a tough loss and blames themselves Noya will try to take on the blame on himself to make them feel better. When in reality, addressing the problems head on and pushing to work together to improve would have worked better than trying to shoulder the burden all on his own.
Noya’s greatest strength is his passion. No matter what he’s doing he throws his whole heart into it. He plays with all his heart, he works with all his heart. No matter how many times he fails or gets pushed down he never stops trying and never stops believing in the people around him or himself. When he fails, he doesn’t think he can’t do it, he knows he can.
4. What is a common misconception other characters have about your character?
People do think that Nishinoya is kind of only a clown. His constant mood making and letting himself be the butt of the joke have a lot of people not taking him seriously. While he is silly and kind of stupid, he’s not just a clown. There’s normally a reason for when he’s being a clown. He doesn’t care how he looks to other people as long as he’s achieving his goal of resetting the mindset of people around him.
Character Abilities:
No supernatural/superhuman abilities.
He’s an excellent libero in volleyball and has good people skills.
